Is Sugar Toxic?
According to recent research the answer is yes!
Leading researchers in the effort to understand sugar’s effects on our bodies are finding that this palette pleaser is in fact killing us. Heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and other modern diseases are linked to excess sugar consumption. Beyond that it has been found that sugar has the ability to fuel and grow tumors in 1/3 of cancers.
What may be the most concerning of all is sugar’s addictive properties. According to studies done looking at the effects of sugar on the brain, sugar causes the same dopamine response as cocaine. With this high level of addictiveness it seems obvious that kicking the “sugar habit” would be hard enough on its own, but sugar is even in some foods that we may think are safe like bread, spaghetti sauce, and peanut butter.
The answer? Eat real food! Whole foods, those that appear in nature the same way they appear on your plate. The sugar found in real food isn’t bad for you, but processed sugar is toxic. The difference? Nature provides our sugar filled fruits with fiber. Fiber slows the absorption of sugar into our blood stream and reduces the amount we can consume. Can you imagine eating 10 oranges in one sitting? How about drinking a large glass of orange juice? The latter certainly seems more realistic but that’s also the choice that allows us to consume massive amounts of this toxic substance with unregulated access to our bloodstream. Follow these two simple guidelines to reduce your sugar intake, feel better, and perform like a rockstar in the gym:
- Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no added sugar.
- Keep intake levels that support exercise but not excess body fat.
This is a real problem in our society today. What are you going to do to improve your health right now?
